How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
If you think your child may have a speech or language delay, a good place to start is with your pediatrician, day care provider, or teacher. They can be helpful at gauging your child's speech/language skills based on what other children of the same age are doing. All kids develop differently and excel in different areas.

What does the evaluation process look like?
Evaluations may take 30 minutes to 1.5 hours and will occur at your child's preschool. Evaluations are age appropriate and the speech-language pathologist will utilize standardized tests, observations, language samples, and case history information to determine if your child needs speech therapy services. If during the evaluation process your child demonstrates the need for services outside our scope of practice, we may refer you to other professionals like audiologists (hearing services), occupational therapists (fine motor and sensory processing services), an Ear Nose and Throat physician (structural services), or a developmental pediatrician (services for ADHD and Autism, etc. ).

How long and often are speech therapy sessions?
Therapy is always based on the unique needs of your child. We typically recommend 30-minute sessions and depending on the type and severity of deficits, therapy is recommended at 1x, 2x, or 3x per week. The scope and duration of therapy will be discussed in a brief conference after the evaluation report is completed.

Where does my child's therapy take place?
We partner with area preschools to provide services at your child's preschool so services can occur in a familiar environment to aid with skill generalization. An added benefit is speech therapy is one less thing to add to your after-school schedule. Sessions usually take place in a quiet room near your child's classroom, but occasionally your child's speech-language pathologist may join your child in their classroom to help their skills naturally carryover into familiar settings. So therapy can be as smooth as possible, we coordinate with your child's school and teacher to find a beneficial time to see them for speech therapy.

How are speech and behaviors related?
Behavior is a child's first form of communication; as babies, when they are uncomfortable or hungry, rather than talking, they cry to communicate they have a need and if they're happy and content they might smile. As children grow, communication becomes more complex as they combine both behavior and speech to communicate with others around them.
When children have reduced speech skills, their behaviors are often intensified so they can communicate their wants and needs. Andrea has a unique gifting to see beyond the unwanted behavior(s) to discover the root cause of the behaviors and help coach a child to use more efficient ways to communicate and/or suggest other supportive therapies. Do you accept insurance?
At this time we don't, we've chosen to devote our time and resources to providing high quality individualized therapy. We do accept cash, checks, credit cards, and health savings cards.  You can request a superbill to request reimbursement for your out of network benefits with your insurance company.

What is a superbill?
Depending on your out-of-network benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement from your insurance. A Superbill is a receipt of services that have already been rendered. We highly recommend calling your insurance provider to see if they will reimburse you for the services. Be sure to ask your insurance provider:
- Do I have an out-of-network deductible to meet first?
- Do I have out-of-network speech therapy benefits?
- Am I eligible for full reimbursement of the speech services?

Do you provide therapy during the summer/school breaks?
We only provide therapy while your child attends school. Visit our Therapy Calendar to see what dates we provide therapy.
Do I need a pediatrician's referral to start?
Check with your insurance provider to see if this is necessary in order for you to receive reimbursement with a superbill.

How do I get started?
You can either register your child for one of our pre-scheduled Speech & Language Screenings at your child's school or contact us. After briefly talking, we'll learn about your concerns and determine if an evaluation is recommended.
